It may be hard for kids growing up today to imagine, but in the 1980s, crossing guards were often other children. Typically sixth, seventh and eighth graders were given a badge and a vest and asked to help police traffic and help other kids cross the road. Today that would never happen. Parents, police and other adults have taken over the job. Some of them even get paid.
