From Ryder to Slater: These Four ’80 Stars are Making Big Comebacks

Winona Ryder

Slater’s co-star in the cult classic Heathers, Winona Ryder was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s and early 1990s. Ryder was the “It” Girl of the 1990s, playing Cher’s daughter in Mermaids, playing opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day Lewis in Martin Scorsese’s Age of Innocence and embodying Generation X with her role in Reality Bites. Ryder had difficulty transitioning to adult roles. Her Oscar-bait production, Girl Interrupted, wound up introducing the world to Angelina Jolie instead. Although she was nominated for Oscars twice, a shoplifting charge blew Ryder’s career right off the map. After several years of rare appearances in movies, Ryder turned to Netflix as the star of its hit Stranger Things. Ryder’s role as a traumatized mother has reinvigorated her career.
