Google’s Controversial Decision to Honor Yuri Kochiyama With Google Doodle

On May 19, 2016, Google Doodle honored civil rights activist Yuri Kochiyama, a Japanese-American who was friends with Malcolm X. Kochiyama is a legendary civil rights activist to many Americans. However, her public endorsement of controversial figures like Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Osama Bin Laden. Kochiyama was born to Japanese immigrants in the San Pedro California area. She and her family were forcibly removed to an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, along with other Japanese-Americans at the time. The incident was one of the worst civil rights moments in American history.
