Harry Potter is back in a big way! Several years after the seventh and final book in author J.K. Rowling’s beloved series, new material about the Wizarding World is being released in the form of a new play.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
is a new play which debuted in London’s West End on June 7, 2016. The summary of the play is as follows:

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

The play was written by Jack Thorne, based on an original story by Rowling, Thorne and John Tiffany. The play will be released in written form on July 31, 2016, which is Rowling’s birthday.

The show has gotten rave reviews from those who have seen it. Rowling urged fans not to spoil the show for those who haven’t seen it, but word has leaked out about the plot. (Stop now to avoid spoilers!!).

The play begins with Ginny and Harry Potter seeing their youngest son, Albus Severus Potter, off to Hogwarts. One the train to Hogwarts he becomes best friends with none other than Scorpius Malfoy- son of Draco. Scorpius is rumored to be the product of a love affair between Voldemort and Draco’s wife, who may have used a Time Turner to revisit the Dark Lord. When Draco Malfoy asks his former nemesis, Harry Potter, to put out a statement that there are no more Time Turners and thus squash the rumor, Harry complies. However, there is a Time Turner and soon it will fall into the wrong hands.

Meanwhile, Harry and Albus can’t seem to find common ground. Albus was sorted into Slytherin. He thinks his father has blood on his hands from the things that happened in his youth. When Scorpius and Albus find out that Harry refused to go back in time to stop Cedric Diggory from losing the Triwizard Tournament, which led to his death, the two boys steal the Time Turner and return to the past themselves. This fateful decision opens up an alternate reality where nothing is as it seems.

The play revisits some of the most popular characters in Potter lore, including alternate reality appearances by Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Diggory as well as Lily and James Potter – all characters who died in the original novels. The show has already been extended beyond the original run, as the demand from fans is overwhelming. As for a movie version, there are currently no plans for an on-screen appearance. But Potter lovers have a significant amount of new material to look forward to. The movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is out later in 2016.
