When the donation was announced, CBS This Morning described her passion: “Highsmith is at work on a decades-long project photographing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Her pictures, thousands of them, are going to the Library of Congress and are being made available free for anyone to use.” As the TV program noted, CBS used over 30 of Highsmith’s images of the World Trade Center, taken just two months before 9/11, in its online report about the tragedy.
Highsmith’s work explores a changing and disappearing way of life in all corners of the United States. The Library of Congress expects her digital archive to become its single biggest collection. What’s all this have to do with Getty Images?
