Metaverse News : European Commission’s $400,000 Metaverse Gala Failed

In mid-October, the Department for International Relations of the European Commission presented on Twitter the project of the Global Gateway digital platform. On Tuesday, November 29, a gala concert was held in the metaverse, which was attended by only six people.

What is this site?

A video with the presentation of the platform can be viewed in the  publication on the official page of the department. Immediately, we note that at least controversial character design, poor study of the environment and clumsy animation catches the eye.

It is strange that the project cost 387 thousand euros ($407.4 thousand). Note that the platform was conceived as an analogue of a social network where people could meet and discuss “global problems” together.

Empty and dead world

On Tuesday, November 29, a gala concert was held at the Global Gateway. It was attended by journalist Vince Chadwick. According to him, there were only five guests at the evening, not counting himself. And after “stunningly short” conversations, Vince was completely alone.

Recall that the Global Gateway was supposed to become a “visiting card” of the European Commission. The goal of the project is to attract an audience aged 18 to 35. But this initiative failed completely. It seems that the project cost much less than the declared amount. But this is not the most interesting.

“Shame and Depression”

The Devex portal, citing a source in the department , states that the situation shocked the employees themselves.

Here is a comment from one of them: “We were shocked. Who even approved this?”

Another noted that the announcement of the project causes shame and depression. The magazine also contacted several experts on the topic, and each of them gave a disappointing assessment of the platform from a technical point of view.

The European Commission responded to the request of the portal with a reply. It says that the project aims to “engage the audience” and will not be judged from an expert point of view. It seems that this is enough justification to present the platform in a frankly “raw” form.

What the $400,000 Metaverse Offers

Instead of personalized avatars on the site, users control characters in the form of balloons. The appearance constructor is elementary.

You cannot rotate the camera using the keyboard. Most of the movements are performed with the mouse, and the list of possible functions for interacting with the world is extremely meager.

There is no flight, although it was announced in the announcement. The environment is full of bots, and social features are limited to chat. And all this is implemented in an absolutely ridiculous manner.

It is noteworthy that according to the documents, the European Commission holds parties at the Global Gateway every week. It remains only to hope that there is real benefit from the project, otherwise it is better to free up space on the servers for something more worthwhile.
