Nicki Minaj, the renowned rapper, took on a temporary role as a film critic on Monday, following the world premiere of “Barbie” in Los Angeles on Sunday. The 40-year-old artist stood alongside the film’s star, Margot Robbie, on the vibrant pink carpet, even retweeting a video of their joint pose.
Minaj couldn’t help but express her admiration, describing Robbie as “strikingly gorgeous in person.” She then proceeded to share her review of the film, offering her insights on the highly anticipated premiere.
“Btw, the entire cast of this movie nailed it,” Minaj said in the tweet. “The film is so visually stimulating. The actors can actually act, & the comedic timing is actually on time. Bravo. Iโll see it again & give my final analysis around the 21st. Will Ferrell, I ๐ U.”
Not only did Nicki Minaj attend the world premiere of “Barbie,” but she also had a notable presence on the star-studded Barbie soundtrack. Among the tracks on the soundtrack, including Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” Minaj contributed with her song “Barbie World,” a collaboration with Ice Spice. The track samples Aqua’s popular 1997 hit “Barbie Girl,” adding Minaj’s unique touch to the album.
“Thx, Forbes & s/o all the incredibly talented artists/producers on theย #BarbieMovieย soundtrack. Mark Ronson, Kev Weaver, Greta Gerwig, Mattelโฆ you guys could have chosen anyone to be a part of this project,”ย Minaj tweeted Monday. “Glad you knew how much it would mean to the barbz & me. So Grateful.”
The Barbie soundtrack features an impressive lineup of artists including Lizzo, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Tame Impala, Haim, Dominic Fike, Sam Smith, and Khalid. Notably, Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in the movie, performs the track “I’m Just Ken” on the album.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie is a film co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. The cast includes Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, and Dua Lipa, who portray various versions of Barbie alongside Margot Robbie. Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Scott Evans, Ncuti Gatwa, and John Cena join Gosling in portraying different Kens.
In the lead-up to the film’s release, Robbie showcased various outfits inspired by iconic Barbie dolls, curated by stylist Andrew Mukamal. While many of these ensembles featured the signature pink color, Robbie turned heads on Sunday by donning a striking black Schiaparelli sequined gown, reminiscent of the Solo in the Spotlight Barbie.
โWe’re finding Barbie references from decades past and just doing it really for the big Barbie fans out there, people who are actually collecting those Barbies. We’re hoping to get them excited,โ Robbie told PEOPLE at the world premiere. โWe’re pairing Barbie references with great designers.โ
The two-time Oscar-nominated star also shared her take on Barbie’s glamorous style. โWell, it’s not subtle, but it’s very fun!โ she said.
During the filming of “Barbie,” Margot Robbie took her commitment to the pink theme to another level by introducing a “pink day” on set. According to Ryan Gosling, Robbie’s co-star, everyone involved in the production had to wear something pink on that designated day.
To ensure compliance, fines were imposed on those who didn’t adhere to the dress code, and the collected funds were then donated to a charitable cause.
Gosling further shared his observations about the film’s impact on the male crew members. He expressed how special it was to witness their enthusiasm and dedication to the project.
At the conclusion of filming, the crew members came together and, out of their own pockets, created custom pink crew shirts adorned with rainbow fringe. This heartfelt gesture served as a tribute to both Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig, showcasing their respect and admiration for the creative vision they brought to the film.
Gosling likened the moment to the memorable scene from “Dead Poets Society” where the students stand on their desks and exclaim, “O captain! My captain!” It symbolized the unity and appreciation felt by the crew towards their leaders.
