Audience reception for Gerwig’s latest venture was exceptionally positive, earning the movie an “A” CinemaScore, along with an impressive 90% Tomatometer rating and audience score. Additionally, the film’s box office performance was nothing short of extraordinary, surpassing expectations.
Barbie was initially projected to make around $165 million at the global box office, but it far exceeded those predictions, amassing a staggering $337 million worldwide. This impressive figure includes earnings from its three-day opening weekend, as well as advance screenings held on the preceding Wednesday and Thursday.

The movie’s domestic performance was equally remarkable, raking in $155 million in the United States. Barbie’s international numbers were even more impressive, contributing an impressive $182 million to the global box office total.
The film’s opening weekend has become the most significant success of the 2023 summer box office. Even against stiff competition like Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Barbie emerged victorious, surpassing Oppenheimer’s earnings by a substantial margin. It set a new record for the largest amount of money in advance sales for Warner Bros., reaching an impressive $49.5 million. Additionally, Barbie marked a milestone as the best opening by a female director domestically, with Greta Gerwig achieving this feat single-handedly, outdoing the previous record held by Captain Marvel’s Anna Boden.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One surprisingly slid to fourth place with $19.5 million during its second weekend.
