8 Female Psycho Killers Who Changed the Horror Genre

Women have been labeled the “weaker sex” for centuries, even though some ladies can be many times more dangerous than any man. The classic adage “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” is a perfect illustration of the power that any woman can wield if she chooses to do so. Don’t believe me? Then look at these horror movies!

1. Misery

In this adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name, the role of Annie Wilks was played by Katie Bates. She is a big fan of one Paul Sheldon — a famous writer. One day Paul gets into a car accident near Annie’s house, and she starts taking care of him like he’s some VIP. But after learning that Sheldon was going to kill off her favorite character from the novels, Annie breaks the writer’s legs and forces him to come up with a new ending.

2. Basic Instinct

Sharon Stone’s serial killer Catherine Tramell does not look insane; she does not have a craving for violence and doesn’t hate her victims. On the contrary, she hides her true intentions behind a mask of charm and sexual attraction. But this only makes Catherine more dangerous because none of her cold-blooded murders stagger her even a little.

3. Serial Mom

Here, the main character is an exemplary housewife — a loving wife, a caring mother, a friendly neighbor, and a respectable citizen. But something evil slumbers inside this impeccable lady. As soon as her kids and husband leave for work or school, mommy goes to dish out justice in her own peculiar way. No-one is safe from her unleashed fury, not even pesky children, impudent merchants, or casual randos.

4. Bride of Chucky

A journey into the world of “Child’s Play” transforms sweet Tiffany, Chucky’s ex-girlfriend, completely changing her character and turning her into a real maniac who knows no pity. The charming Jennifer Tilly wasn’t good enough to impress the critics, but we, the audience, loved it, making the fourth film in the Chucky series the most successful.

5. Monster

If fictional stories about female killers don’t seem impressive enough to you, then let’s go back to the real world. Eileen Wuornos has many good reasons to be mad about her life: a hooker who is constantly being beaten is unlikely to become an exemplary member of society. After another assault, Eileen, portrayed by Charlize Theron, gets her hands on a loaded gun, and off she goes. Now only the electric chair can stop this sad, broken, and desperate killer.

6. Jennifer’s Body

Jennifer’s Body is a dark comedy/horror with some supernatural elements, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried as two best friends: one’s a nerd and the other one’s Megan Fox. Their formerly strong friendship is put to the test when a popular rock band comes to their town. After meeting their idols, Jennifer comes back as a bloodthirsty succubus and starts killing hot boys, including Amanda’s dear boyfriend.

7. Mother’s Day

Poor balance of horror and comedy threw Mother’s Day into a limbo between the two genres: not very funny and not too scary. But even despite the flaws, the movie is still worth your attention thanks to its wicked main antagonists — a freaky mother and her redneck psycho sons. They really like to play with their food, if you catch my drift.

8. Friday the 13th

Throughout the whole movie, which starts as an “urban legend,” the heroes believe that they are fleeing from the ghost of a boy who once died in the waters of Crystal Lake, but the final twist shows that Jason Voorhees’ mother, Pamela, was behind the gruesome deaths of all those teenagers. But then the final-final twist shows us baby Jason springing from the lake to avenge his mother’s death.
