Chris Hemsworth Aims to Avoid Overstaying as Thor to Prevent Audience Fatigue

Few big-screen superheroes have undergone as much evolution as Thor. While Loki may be the shape-shifting member of the Odinson family, it’s Chris Hemsworth’s Marvel debut in 2011 that has truly showcased Thor’s transformative journey.

Marvel enthusiasts have witnessed Hemsworth’s portrayal shift from a regal, golden-haired Asgardian prince to a tragic hero, and from a disheveled, downcast character to a lighthearted protagonist in romantic comedies.

Hemsworth has dedicated over a decade to portraying Thor, gracing the screen in nine Marvel films. His recent appearance in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder hinted at future escapades.

In an exclusive interview with EW for his cover story on Extraction 2, the Australian actor was asked about his plans regarding wielding Thor’s hammer once again.

His answer? Maybe!

“I’ve got to be careful how I word that because I have no idea what’s happening in the next phase,” Hemsworth tells EW. “There’s always conversations, like with Extraction. Before anything is official, people are throwing around ideas. But officially, I don’t know.”

Thor stands alone as the sole Marvel character to have four solo movies, not to mention his notable appearances in various Avengers films.

While Chris Hemsworth thoroughly enjoys portraying the character, he expresses a desire for any future Thor film to be an opportunity for exploration and experimentation in terms of style and genre.

In essence, Hemsworth aims to avoid creating a sense of “Thor’s Greatest Hits” in his Marvel appearances, ensuring each endeavor brings something fresh and distinct to the table.

“I don’t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character,” he adds.

“If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable.”

As Marvel continues its ambitious lineup, audiences can anticipate a wealth of captivating content. Coming up, Samuel L. Jackson will take the lead in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, promising thrilling intrigue.

Additionally, The Marvels, featuring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, will grace the big screen on November 10, delivering a cinematic spectacle for fans to savor.
