The fourth major update for iOS 14 focuses on important detail improvements and bug fixes – and warns of fake iPhone cameras.
Apple has released iOS and iPadOS 14.4 for download: the update can be installed on iPhones and iPads using the integrated software update function; the download size varies depending on the model. Alternatively, it is still possible to import the new version as a complete package from the PC with iTunes or – from macOS 10.15 – via the Finder.
Apple improves the hearing protection function
iOS 14.4 brings an important innovation for users of Bluetooth speakers and Bluetooth infotainment systems in cars who are plagued by an automatic reduction in volume : The devices can be manually assigned to their appropriate category in the Bluetooth settings of the new version, so that no longer to fall under Apple’s “headphone safety”, which can significantly lower the volume for hearing protection.
Apple also announced that the camera should also capture smaller QR codes in iOS 14.4. The interaction between HomePod mini and iPhones with a U1 chip has also been improved: the transfer of music from the iPhone to the loudspeaker (or vice versa) should work more reliably via ultra-broadband radio and be made noticeable by vibration.
Warning of fake iPhone cameras
Owners of an iPhone 12 will in future be warned after a repair case if iOS considers the replaced camera system to be not an original Apple part . Similar warnings are already available for “fake” batteries and displays, but the functionality should not be restricted.
The update is supposed to eliminate a problem with the keyboard, which makes it slow to respond to typing and does not display word suggestions, as Apple also lists. The Messages app also no longer chooses the wrong keyboard language. Problems with the update have been fixed in Apple’s fitness widget. Image artifacts that can occur in HDR photos taken with the iPhone 12 Pro should be eliminated in version 14.4. As usual, the update should also close security gaps, details will usually follow later in the evening.
