The Biden Administration Unveils Additional Security Support for Ukraine

Today, the Department of Defense (DoD) disclosed further security support aimed at addressing Ukraine’s essential security and defense requirements. This marks the fifty-fourth distribution of equipment by the Biden Administration from DoD inventories to Ukraine since August 2021. The assortment encompasses added air defense capabilities, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and various equipment to bolster Ukraine’s ability to counteract Russia’s aggressive military actions.

This support package taps into previously approved assistance for Ukraine from preceding fiscal years under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA).

The capabilities in this much-needed package, valued at up to $250 million, include:

  • Additional munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS);
  • Stinger anti-aircraft missiles;
  • Air defense system components;
  • Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
  • 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds;
  • Tube-launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles;
  • Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems;
  • More than 15 million rounds of small arms ammunition;
  • Demolition munitions for obstacle clearing;
  • Spare parts, medical equipment, maintenance, and other ancillary equipment.

These capabilities will reinforce Ukraine’s immediate requirements, empowering its forces to safeguard sovereignty and independence. U.S. leadership plays a vital role in sustaining the collaborative efforts of approximately 50 allies and partners currently backing Ukraine.

Investing in security assistance for Ukraine is a prudent commitment to our national security. It not only acts as a deterrent against potential aggression worldwide but also fortifies our defense industrial base, generating highly skilled jobs for the American workforce. It is imperative that Congress promptly acts on the President’s national security supplemental request in the new year to ensure ongoing support for Ukraine. This action is crucial for Ukraine to defend itself against Russia’s persistent attacks and to solidify and extend its gains on the battlefield.
