Putin Gifts Russian Car to North Korea’s Kim in Growing Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin has gifted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with a Russian-manufactured car for his personal use, as reported by the state-run media of the Asian nation on Tuesday. This gesture further solidifies the growing diplomatic ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.

The official Korean Central News Agency stated that the present was received by Kim Yo Jong, the leader’s sister, and Pak Jong Chon, the secretary of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, on Sunday. However, the report did not specify the location where the North Korean officials received the vehicle.

Last September, during his visit to the Russian Far East, Kim Jong Un explored the Aurus luxury car, sitting in the rear passenger seat, according to the Tass news agency.

It’s worth noting that U.N. Security Council resolutions prohibit the export of luxury goods, including vehicles, to North Korea due to concerns related to its missile and nuclear programs.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of her brother, Kim Yo Jong conveyed thanks to Putin, emphasizing that the gift “serves as a clear demonstration of the special personal relations between the top leaders,” according to KCNA.

The deepening relations between Russia and North Korea have been noted since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The United States has claimed that Pyongyang has provided military equipment and munitions to Moscow for its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.
