“iPhone 13 Pro”: Smaller notch, 120 Hertz – Mini remains, folding phone is coming?

An accurate analyst has given the first details about the next iPhone series – and also when Apple is planning the next SE and a folding smartphone.

Ming-Chi Kuo claims to have learned new, fresh details about the coming iPhone generations from the Taiwanese investment house TF International Securities. In a report to investors based on statements from the supply chain, there is information about the 2021 Apple smartphones as well as details about the third generation of the iPhone SE and a new variant with a foldable display.

Line-up remains the same as with the iPhone 12

As in 2020 , Kuo sees four models of the “iPhone 13” . There will be an “iPhone 13 mini” with 5.4 inches – although the 12 version is reportedly selling worse than Apple expected . Apple is not yet planning a design without a Lightning connector for 2021, nor is there a change to USB-C ports. With the “iPhone 13 Pro” and the “iPhone 13 Pro Max” there should be the biggest changes. The two models allegedly come with LPTO screens with 120 Hertz – the ProMotion technology that Apple already uses in the iPad Pro.

The cameras should be improved. The Pro models get a new ultra-wide camera with 6P (f / 1.8) and autofocus. The battery capacity is increased (which makes a slight increase in weight necessary), the LIDAR module is reserved for the Pro models, according to Kuo. Kuo does not want to confirm whether Apple will install an additional Touch ID sensor in the display or even in the sleep / wake button – the plan is in place when the implementation will take place, but unclear. Kuo sees the sleep / wake version as in the iPad Air 4 as an in-panel solution. Kuo has also heard that a new Qualcomm 5G modem (X60M with 5 nm structure width) is to be installed. The Face ID bar (notch) should be a bit smaller.

It will be more exciting in 2022 and 2023

All in all, one can assume that the “iPhone 13” will be more of an “S” year, as expected, so Apple is primarily relying on an improved interior with a new SoC . The “iPhone 14”, which Kuo also talks about in his report to investors, will be more exciting. The “iPhone 14 Pro” is supposed to get a “punch-hole” display instead of a notch for the first time. This is already known from various Android devices. A small hole would then contain the Face ID module and would free up more space on the screen. Kuo does not expect a new iPhone SE – this time with 5G technology – until 2022, despite rumors to the contrary .

For the first time in 2023, Apple should work on a foldable iPhone . It’ll have a 7.5 to 8 inch screen. Furthermore, Apple is to plan for the first time a device complete with a full display as a Pro version, also for 2023. Here, Face ID is completely in the display.
