Late Wednesday, a considerable number of Instagram users worldwide encountered issues while trying to access the widely-used photo-sharing platform. Downdetector.com, a website that monitors service outages, revealed that Instagram, which is owned by Meta, suffered a disruption that affected thousands of users across the globe.
At its peak, Downdetector disclosed that more than 46,000 users in the United States alone experienced difficulties accessing the platform. In addition, over 3,000 affected users were reported in both the United Kingdom and India.
Downdetector collects outage information from diverse sources, which comprises errors reported by users on its platform. Instagram users reported experiencing challenges while logging in, uploading content, and accessing specific features of the app during the outage. Although the exact cause of the disruption was uncertain, it lasted for multiple hours before the service was reinstated. This left numerous users annoyed and unable to utilize the platform during the outage. Whether this event resulted from technical glitches on Instagram’s end or other factors remains unclear.
