OpenAI was a relatively obscure organization until the launch of ChatGPT, a revolutionary AI chatbot, a few months ago. However, what may be unknown to many is that Elon Musk was among the founders of OpenAI when it was a non-profit organization.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has transformed the landscape of AI chatbots. Musk’s tweet regarding his $100 million donation to OpenAI during its early days has drawn significant attention.
Musk expressed bewilderment about the non-profit organization’s transformation into a for-profit company with a market capitalization of $30 billion.
He questioned the legality of such a shift and wondered why everyone does not pursue it if it is legitimate. The tweet has raised essential ethical issues regarding for-profit AI companies.
Musk wrote,”Iโm still confused as to how a non-profit to which I donated ~USD 100M somehow became a USD 30B market cap for-profit. If this is legal, why doesnโt everyone do it?”
ChatGPT was requested by Alex Kehr, CEO of Superlocal, to generate a response to a question posed by Elon Musk. Kehr was impressed with the response generated by ChatGPT, which he described as a “good summary of what went down.”
OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has two distinct entities: a non-profit subsidiary that controls research direction, and a for-profit arm that is focused on developing and commercializing AI technologies.
Recently, OpenAI announced the release of GPT-4, the successor to ChatGPT, which the company claims is more sophisticated and versatile than its predecessor.
GPT-4 has already passed several human-oriented exams, including the GRE, LSAT, and SATs, according to the company’s blog post.
Elon Musk responded to this news by highlighting the need for technological advancements like Neuralink to keep up with AI’s progress and ensure humans remain relevant in various fields.
In the past, Elon Musk has been a vocal critic of both ChatGPT and its parent company, OpenAI. He has previously referred to ChatGPT as being ‘too woke’ and has raised concerns that AI’s social awareness could have serious consequences.
Musk has also accused ChatGPT of being biased towards conservatives. In addition, he has accused Microsoft of turning OpenAI into a profit-oriented entity, despite its non-profit status.
