Microsoft brings the Office app to the iPad

The new combination app from Word, Excel and PowerPoint is now also designed for Apple tablets. A subscription is required even for the entry-level models.

Microsoft has adapted the Office app for iPadOS: The new version 2.46 now also runs on iPads – around a year after the introduction of the combination app on iPhones and Android smartphones. The Office app includes the word processing system Word, the spreadsheet program Excel and the presentation tool PowerPoint, which Microsoft still offers as standalone apps for mobile devices for download.

Office combination with additional functions

The combination app promises additional functions for working with PDF documents, including now also signing documents with Apple Pencil, an integration of Office Lens and better integration of the camera and photo library of the mobile devices: via the sharing menu of iOS For example, a new PowerPoint file or a PDF document can be created directly from images. The Office app also keeps the latest screenshots recorded on the device ready for quick conversion to a PDF or PPT file, as Microsoft explains.

On the iPad mini and older iPads with a display diagonal of less than 10.1 inches, Office can be used free of charge (with a Microsoft account), also for creating and editing documents. On the newer iPads and the iPad Pro with a screen diagonal of 10.2 “or more, a Microsoft 365 subscription is required to activate the full range of functions; it can also be purchased as an in-app purchase in the app.

Adjustments for iPadOS

Microsoft has extensively adapted Word, Excel and PowerPoint to the innovations of iPadOS over the past year: They support working with the mouse and trackpad on the tablet as well as the multi-window mode, which allows multiple documents to be opened in one app and parallel Allows you to work with two documents from the same app in Split View. For users who frequently switch between individual Office apps or want to edit Word and PowerPoint documents side by side, for example, the individual apps should continue to be an advantage, as they can continue to be operated in parallel to the Combi Office app.
