Triskaidekaphobia: why the iPhone 13 may never come out.

The network is spreading information that Apple may refuse to release its iPhone 13 smartphone, the release of which is scheduled for 2021. All the fault of superstition – allegedly Cupertinians may be afraid of the “unlucky” number in the name of their product. Moreover, earlier “apple” already skipped numbers in the naming of the iPhone.

In the fall of 2021, Apple will hold another presentation of the new flagship iPhone line. Despite the fact that there is no official name for it yet, the media tentatively dubbed it “iPhone 13”, since last year’s series of “Apple” smartphones came out under the twelfth number. However, as noted by the CNET portal , the iPhone 13 may not come out either this year or next.

We are not talking about delays in deliveries or interruptions in production – the release of the smartphone will take place, but probably under a different name.

It is no secret that in many countries of the world the number 13 is associated with failure and misfortune. In some buildings, the 13th floor is deliberately “skipped”, couples do not plan weddings on the 13th, and psychotherapists are trying to cure people suffering from triskaidekaphobia – fear of the number “13”.

It is possible that Apple keeps in mind that such negative perceptions and superstitions can alienate some potential buyers from the gadget, which has a โ€œ13โ€ in its name. It’s worth noting that the company previously released the A13 Bionic chipset and an update to the iOS 13 operating system, but the branding of the smartphone is obviously more important than the component or software. Moreover, the iPhone is not only one of the most important products for Apple, bringing in almost half of all the company’s revenues, but also a truly iconic smartphone, so its naming needs to be taken seriously.

In the past, the Cupertinians have already missed the number in the name of the iPhone – we are talking about the 2017 presentation. Then the company presented three devices at once – iPhone 8 (logically following the iPhone 7), iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X (Roman numeral “10”). The world never saw the ninth iPhone.

There was no official explanation from Apple on this issue, so there are several theories why the company abandoned the smartphone with the number “9”.

The most believable of them is associated with a round date – in 2017, the iPhone turned exactly ten years old, and Apple decided in this way to emphasize the solemnity of the moment. In addition, there is a version that the iPhone X was not called the ninth, in order to emphasize the number of differences from the iPhone 8 – supposedly between them not one, but two generations at once. It is also reported that Apple could have abandoned the “nine” as a marketing ploy – if the presentation had presented the iPhone 8, iPhone 9 and iPhone 10, then most of the consumers would have focused on buying the iPhone 9, as an intermediate option between the “cheapest” and “the most expensive”.

How, then, will the “apple” smartphone be called, the release of which should take place in the fall of 2021? Of all the options that are circulating on the web, the iPhone 12s looks the most plausible. Earlier it was reported that this year’s smartphone will face very minor upgrades and differences from last year’s gadget, so this name makes sense. Moreover, Apple has already used such a scheme – in 2015, the iPhone 6s appeared on store shelves, which became the โ€œsuccessorโ€ of the iPhone 6, and in 2018 the iPhone Xs, which is a slightly more advanced version of the iPhone X, was released.
