Elon Musk loses title of world’s richest person… again

0

After briefly regaining his position as the world’s richest person, Elon Musk has lost the title once again, as reported by Fortune. According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his net worth had surged to an estimated $187.1 billion earlier this week. However, Tesla’s shares experienced a decline of over 5% on Wednesday, causing Musk’s net worth to drop by nearly $2 billion. Consequently, Bernard Arnault, CEO of French luxury brand Louis Vuitton, has retaken the top spot. Musk’s net worth dropped to $184 billion, down $1.91 billion on the day, placing him below Arnault’s $186 billion fortune.

Just two days after Elon Musk reclaimed the title of world’s richest person, he has now lost it again to French billionaire Bernard Arnault. Tesla’s share price fell over 65% in 2022, causing Musk’s net worth to plummet over $200 billion between November 2021 and December 2022. However, Tesla has since rebounded, climbing 100% due to increased investor demand, customer interest in discounted models, and a better economic forecast, according to Bloomberg.

Tesla’s plummeting stock value caused a sudden decline, resulting in the company’s worst year on Wall Street with a $700 billion loss, fueled by investor concerns over the effects of COVID-19 in China and Mr. Musk’s contentious takeover of Twitter. Despite the chaos surrounding his finances, Mr. Musk made light of the situation and joked on Twitter that he had spent $44 billion to acquire “the world’s largest non-profit” after continuously taking over the micro-blogging site in 2022.

Twitter, the social media company, has undergone significant layoffs under the leadership of billionaire Elon Musk. In November, Musk tweeted that the microblogging site was losing almost $4 million daily, and the company has since undergone eight rounds of layoffs, reducing its workforce from 7,500 employees to around 2,000.

GQG Partners Inc buys $1.87 billion stakes in Adani Group firms

0

On Friday, global investor GQG Partners Inc purchased stakes worth $1.87 billion in four companies under India’s Adani Group, causing their share prices to surge. This is the first significant investment in Gautam Adani’s conglomerate since a critical report by U.S.-based Hindenburg Research led to a $130 billion market value loss for seven of Adani’s listed firms. The report cited high debt, alleged misuse of offshore tax havens, and stock manipulation. Adani denied these claims, but the ensuing drop in stock prices led the group to cancel a $2.5 billion share sale.

Kotak Institutional Equities analysts suggest that GQG’s investment may alleviate concerns about the Adani Group’s ability to attract funding for loan repayments against its listed company shares. As of September 2022, Adani Group firms had a total net debt of $24.1 billion. The group has attempted to reassure investors since the report with road shows and calls with bondholders.

Avinash Gorakshakar, head of research at Profitmart Securities, views GQG’s stake purchase as a positive development for Adani Group stocks, which have experienced a prolonged period of underperformance and widespread selling.

GQG Partners buys significant stakes in four Adani Group firms for $1.87 billion, causing share prices to surge. The purchases include 3.4% of Adani Enterprises Ltd, 4.1% of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, 2.5% of Adani Transmission Ltd, and 3.5% of Adani Green Energy Ltd. Adani Enterprises’ shares rose by 11.4%, while Adani Ports increased by 8.1%, and Adani Green Energy and Adani Transmission jumped 5% each in intraday trade. GQG’s Sydney-listed shares ended Friday down 3%, but Chairman and Chief Investment Officer Rajiv Jain noted that the Florida-based firm had carried out its own “deep dive” into Adani and disagreed with Hindenburg’s report. Jain’s investors are well aware that he does not explicitly run an ESG fund and that he goes for wherever there is unrealised value, according to Morningstar analyst Shaun Ler. GQG is up 3.58% this year, in line with the benchmark.

Russia Must Be Punished for Ukraine War – US, Quad Allies Say

0

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Russia must not wage war with impunity, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and his Indian, Japanese, and Australian counterparts said in a statement on Friday after a meeting in New Delhi.

The so-called Quad group also said the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine was “unacceptable.”

Late last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin suspended a landmark nuclear arms control treaty and threatened to resume nuclear tests.

“If we allow Russia to do what it did in Ukraine with impunity, it sends a message to future attackers everywhere that they can get away with it too,” Blinken said at a forum in India.

Blinken met his Quad counterparts on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in New Delhi, where ministers shared blame for the conflict.

The day before, Blinken met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New Delhi for the first time since the start of the Ukraine conflict more than a year ago. During the brief meeting, a senior US official said that Blinken urged Moscow to end the war and lift its suspension of the new START nuclear deal.

Russian news agencies reported that the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov and Blinken spoke for less than 10 minutes and did not enter into negotiations.

At the G20 meeting, the United States and its allies urged member nations to continue to pressure Russia to end the conflict. Still, the G20 could not agree to it due to opposition from Russia, which described its move as a “special.” joint declaration on some of China’s military and war operations.

On Friday, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called on the world community to work together. “Anyone abstaining in various regions needs to understand that we are facing something that is disrupting the possibility of a global consensus,” he said.

In their statement, the Quartet ministers also lashed out at China’s thin line, condemning moves that escalate tensions in the South China Sea and the “militarization” of disputed areas in the region.

China has denounced the Quad as a Cold War construct and a group that “targets other countries”. The group’s title is the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue Focusing on Strategic Issues in the Indo-Pacific Region.

New Wireless Gaming Headsets, Keyboard, and 500Hz IPS Gaming Monitor: Alienware

Alienware Expands Its Line of PC Peripherals with New Products

Alienware, a premium PC gaming brand known for its powerful gaming PCs and sleek space-age designs, has recently introduced a new suite of PC peripherals to cater to a wider range of needs and budgets.

The brand already has a strong reputation for its gaming monitors, which are highly regarded by gamers, and its collection of gaming headsets, gaming keyboards, and gaming mice. Now, the brand is expanding its line of peripherals with the addition of two new hi-res gaming headsets, a wireless mouse, and its first-ever wireless gaming keyboard. With the exception of three products – the Alienware AW720H headset, AW620M gaming mouse, and AW920K keyboard – all new releases are wireless, offering high-performance gaming without the inconvenience of being tethered to your PC.

The new AW520H headset, which has dual USB + 3.5mm connectivity, provides the same 20Hz to 40,000Hz hi-res audio as the AW720H headset. Meanwhile, Alienware has also launched the “world’s first 500Hz IPS gaming monitor,” the 24.5-inch 1080p Alienware 500Hz AW2524H. This gaming monitor offers a 500Hz refresh rate, 0.5ms GtG response time, and Nvidia’s Reflex Latency Analyzer, which helps gamers optimize their systems to minimize latency. It also boasts sRGB 99% color coverage, AlienFX RGB lighting, and an integrated headset hanger for convenient storage of the AW720H or AW520H headset.

With these new products, Alienware is expanding its line of PC peripherals to offer a wider range of options for gamers with varying needs and budgets.

Release Dates for Alienware’s New Peripherals

Alienware’s latest suite of PC peripherals is launching today, but the release dates for each product will be staggered. The AW620M gaming mouse and the AW720H wireless gaming headset are available for purchase today at $99.99 and $159.99, respectively. However, the AW2524H gaming monitor will not be available until March 21, with a price tag of $829.99.

As for the AW520H wired gaming headset and AW920K wireless gaming keyboard, which are priced at $99.99 and $289.99, respectively, their release dates are scheduled for Q2 of this year. Unfortunately, Alienware has not yet provided a definite release date for these products. We will keep you updated on UK and Australian pricing and availability as soon as we obtain more information.

Is a 500Hz Refresh Rate Worth It for Gaming?

We have had the chance to fully test the Alienware AW720H headset, but we have yet to try out the rest of the new peripherals from Alienware. The AW720H provides an immersive audio experience with a wide soundstage and impressive hi-res audio quality. In addition, it is comfortable to wear for extended periods and has a long battery life of up to 30 hours.

Given the quality of the AW720H, we are excited to see what the rest of the peripherals lineup has to offer, especially the gaming monitor with its 500Hz refresh rate. Generally, higher refresh rates can be more demanding on your system, but Alienware has limited the resolution to 1080p, which may make a difference. However, the question remains whether such a high refresh rate is necessary for most gamers, especially since it sacrifices resolution.

Many gamers already question the necessity of 360Hz refresh rates, which require more power from the CPU and GPU. Moreover, some gamers prefer the added detail and sharpness of 1440p and 4K monitors, particularly for visually-stunning open-world games.

Asus attempted to release a similar 24-inch 1080p 500Hz gaming monitor in 2022, but it has yet to hit the market. This raises the question of whether there is a demand for such a fast display. Nonetheless, Alienware is pushing forward with its own 500Hz monitor, and it will be interesting to see how it performs in real-world use.

Train Crash in Greece: Families Await DNA Results as Death Toll Rises

Families of the victims of Greece’s worst-ever train crash anxiously awaited the results of DNA testing to identify their loved ones. The crash, which occurred on Tuesday night,

killed at least 57 people, with fears that the death toll could rise as emergency crews continue to search through the wreckage.

Workers at the national rail system went on strike on Thursday, citing concerns about the outdated, underfunded, and dangerous state of the system. The Greek government has attributed the accident to human error and has charged a railway official with manslaughter.

As rescuers carefully combed through the mangled passenger carriages, more than 48 people were being treated in hospitals across Greece, with six of them in intensive care. The majority of the injured were located in the central city of Larissa.

RESIDENTS LINE UP IN RAIN TO GIVE BLOOD

Despite the bad weather, many residents of Larissa stood in the heavy rain for more than an hour to donate blood for the injured. The city’s hotel association also offered free accommodations to the relatives of those who lost their lives in the tragic accident.

DNA Matching Underway for Victims of Greek Train Crash as Families Await News

Police spokeswoman Constandia Dimoglidou confirmed on Thursday that at least four families had received confirmation that their relatives were among the dead in the Greek train crash that occurred earlier this week. Despite the process usually taking several days, authorities are making an effort to complete the identification process by Friday, with 24 bodies having been identified through DNA so far.

The testing was necessary as many of the bodies were badly burned or mangled beyond recognition, making identification challenging. Among those awaiting news of their loved ones was Dimitris Bournazis, who expressed frustration over his unsuccessful attempts to communicate with Italian-owned train operator Hellenic Train to find out what seat his father was in.

WORKERS, RELATIVES SAY TRAIN SYSTEM UNSAFE

Meanwhile, railway workers’ associations called for strikes, halting national rail services and the subway in Athens to protest against working conditions and the lack of modernization of the rail system, which they described as dangerous. Two separate protests in central Athens were held by left-wing groups, with one resulting in clashes between stone-throwing youths and riot police. Protests were also held in Thessaloniki and Larissa.

The situation remains tense as families and loved ones continue to wait for updates on the identification process while calls for safety improvements to the rail system grow louder.

Critics Say Lack of Public Investment Contributed to Greek Train Crash

The deadly train crash that occurred in Greece this week has raised questions about the country’s limited rail network and outdated infrastructure. Critics have blamed a lack of public investment, which they say was exacerbated by the deep financial crisis that spanned most of the previous decade and nearly led to Greece’s bankruptcy.

In 2017, the rail operator, which was heavily losing money, was privatized and bought by Italy’s Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group. However, despite years of modernization projects, much of the key rail control work is still manually operated, and the country’s rail network does not reach much of the country.

According to Costas Genidounias, the head of the engine drivers’ union, an up-to-date traffic control system was supposed to have been ready three years ago. Despite sending legal notices to the company responsible for Greece’s railway infrastructure, OSE, as well as government and regulatory officials, union representatives received no reply.

OSE has expressed condolences to the victims’ families but has not publicly commented on the criticism. Meanwhile, union representatives have argued that Hellenic Train, OSE, and the current and previous governments share responsibility for the accident, as they ignored concerns raised by employees over health and safety issues and the possibility of a serious accident.

Markos Bekris, a union representative who took part in a peaceful protest in Athens on Thursday, described the collision as “a crime waiting to happen.” As calls for improvements to Greece’s rail system grow louder, the government and relevant authorities will face mounting pressure to take action to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

A FOREST OF RESPONSIBILITY

Transportation Minister Kostas Karamanlis resigned following the crash and officials launched a judicial inquiry to determine how two trains traveled in opposite directions on the same track for more than 10 minutes without anyone raising the alarm.

The Larissa station manager was charged Thursday with multiple counts of manslaughter and causing serious physical harm through negligence. His name was not released.

The stationmasterโ€™s lawyer, Stefanos Pandzardzidis, said his client was โ€œdevastatedโ€ and accepted โ€œhis portion of the responsibility.โ€

โ€œBut beyond that โ€ฆ we must not focus on the tree while thereโ€™s a whole forest beyond it,โ€ he said. โ€œThereโ€™s a forest of responsibility.โ€

Bournazis agreed that the responsibility for the crash should go far beyond the stationmaster.

โ€œWe canโ€™t dump all the blame on one person for making one mistake,โ€ he said.

He said the crash should lead to a full safety overhaul of the countryโ€™s rail system.

โ€œIโ€™ve lost my brother, my father. That canโ€™t change, I know it,โ€ he said. โ€œBut the point is for us not to mourn victims like that again. They bought 50 tickets to death.โ€

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged in a televised statement Wednesday night to get to the bottom of the disaster.

โ€œResponsibility will be assigned. We will work so that the words โ€˜never againโ€™ โ€ฆ will not remain an empty pledge,โ€ he said. โ€œThat I promise you.โ€

CENTIMETER BY CENTIMETER

Amid the growing criticism, emergency workers continued their grim recovery effort, proceeding โ€œcentimeter by centimeterโ€ through mounds of twisted steel, shattered glass and scattered luggage, said Fire Service spokesman Yiannis Artopios.

โ€œWe can see that there are more (bodies) of people there. Unfortunately they are in a very bad condition,โ€ he told state television.

Rescuers were focusing on the restaurant car, which was crushed under the first carriage from the force of the collision, said fire official Vassilios Vathrakogiannis.

โ€œThis morning we removed seven burned bodies from that carriage,โ€ he said.

He added that the entire operation was expected to be concluded by midday Friday.

CRASH SURVIVOR DESCRIBES FIERY ESCAPE

About 350 people were on the passenger train, many of them students returning from a holiday weekend and annual Carnival celebrations around Greece.

Andreas Alikaniotis, a 20-year-old survivor, described how he and fellow students escaped from a jackknifed train car as the fire approached, smashing windows and throwing luggage outside to use as a makeshift landing pad.

โ€œIt was a steep drop, into a ditch,โ€ Alikaniotis, who suffered a knee injury, told reporters from his hospital bed in Larissa.

โ€œThe lights went out. โ€ฆ The smoke was suffocating inside the rail car but also outside,โ€ Alikaniotis said.

He said he was โ€œone of the few around who had not been seriously injured.โ€

โ€œMe and my friends helped people get out.โ€

S Jaishankar acknowledges division among G20 members on Ukraine war

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar acknowledges divergences among G20 members on Ukraine war at Delhi meeting

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar spoke to reporters at the G20 meeting under India’s presidency and acknowledged that there were “divergences” among the member countries regarding the Ukraine conflict. He explained that despite discussions among Foreign Ministers, the differences could not be reconciled, leading to an outcome document instead of a joint statement. Sources indicate that objections from both Russia and China regarding the wording on the Ukraine war prevented a joint statement for the second time, similar to last week’s G20 Finance Ministers’ meeting in Bengaluru. However, Mr. Jaishankar emphasized that there was agreement on “the bulk of issues” relating to the concerns of the global south.

According to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, the majority of the issues discussed at the G20 meeting under India’s presidency resulted in agreement, including strengthening multilateralism, promoting food and energy security, climate change, gender issues, and counterterrorism. He explained that the outcome document captured a considerable meeting of minds on the bulk of issues that concern the global south. However, on two paragraphs, there was a lack of agreement, preventing the issuance of a joint statement. Mr. Jaishankar noted that the outcome document had nearly 90% agreement on the issues discussed.

This inability to reach a joint statement contrasts with the consensus reached by leaders in Bali in November, where the G20 leaders’ statement strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and acknowledged different views and assessments of the situation and sanctions.

India has taken a diplomatic approach to the war and refrained from blaming Russia, instead focusing on seeking a solution while increasing purchases of Russian oil. To prevent the G20 presidency from being dominated by the Ukraine war, India has prioritized issues such as food, energy, and fertilizer security, which impact fewer wealthy nations.

According to India, the majority of G20 members have strongly condemned the war in Ukraine during a meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers in New Delhi. The only countries that disagreed with this condemnation were Russia and China. India’s summary of the meeting’s outcomes closely followed the language used in a previous statement from a G20 financial leaders’ meeting, where Russia and China also disagreed with statements condemning the war.

Messi presented the Argentina World Cup team with 35 gold iPhones
Lionel Messi, Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain, ordered gold iPhones for every member of his squad and support team who took part in the historic win over France in the Qatar 2022 final.

Player names, numbers, and the Argentina logo will be emblazoned on the 24-carat device, valued at ยฃ175,000, according to an article in The Sun. Messi delivered it to his Paris apartment on Saturday.

“Lionel wanted to do something special and sparkly to celebrate his proudest moment. He contacted businessman Ben Lyons, and they came up with a design together,” the source said.

โ€œLionel is not only the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) but also one of iDesign Gold’s most loyal customers and contacted us a few months after the World Cup finals. He said he wanted special gifts for all the players and staff to celebrate the amazing win, but they didn’t want the usual watch gifts,” said Ben, CEO of iDesign Gold.

“So I suggested a gold iPhone with my name written on it, and he loved the idea,” she added.

US judge grants Microsoft access to internal Sony documents on Activision Blizzardย deal

0

Microsoft has gained access to many of Sony’s internal documents regarding its deal with Activision Blizzard – something the PlayStation maker vehemently rejects.

Sony has emerged as a significant takeover opponent, and Microsoft hopes the decision will allow it to gain influence from US regulators ahead of its decision.

A judge has now ruled that Microsoft can review Sony’s communications with regulators about the Activision deal and details of Sony’s exclusivity agreements with game publishers dating back to 2019.

The news comes just a week after a landmark hearing in Brussels attended by senior officials from Microsoft, Activision, Sony, and Google.

Eurogamer is reporting live from a subsequent press conference in which Microsoft President Brad Smith announced that, in addition to his previous agreement with Nintendo, an agreement was reached with Nvidia to support the acquisition to drum up support.

With an imminent decision on a deal, Microsoft has yet to convince a top trio of regulators of the merits of the record-breaking buyout: the EU European Commission, the US Federal Trade Commission and the UK Competition and Markets Authority.

Putin cancels trip to Stavropol Krai in response to reports that โ€˜Ukrainian saboteurs’ have entered the Bryansk region

0

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday Vladimir Putin had canceled a planned trip to the Stavropol Region in light of events in Russia’s Bryansk Region, where Russian officials said “Ukrainian saboteurs” had invaded the country.

Putin is scheduled to attend a ceremony marking this year as Russia’s “Teacher Year”. According to Peskov, Putin will now participate in the ceremony online.
