Carbon 1 MK II: The camera, design and price of the first carbon smartphone

The Carbon 1 MK II is the world’s first smartphone made of carbon fiber and thus has two decisive advantages: It is light and robust. The innovation from Germany will hit the market in mid-March 2021.
As the first carbon smartphone in the world , the Carbon 1 MK II could be a real game changer for the tech industry. If we are more familiar with carbon from racing or the automotive industry, the Berlin technology company Carbon Mobile is now also using the material in its mobile devices. The new innovative smartphone is equipped with a six-inch AMOLED display and weighs only 125 grams – thanks to the carbon fibers. At 6.3 millimeters, it is also remarkably slim.

Carbon 1 MK II: The technical details of the carbon smartphone

The Carbon 1 MK II is delivered with the Android 10 operating system as standard – an upgrade to Android 11 will also take place soon. Inside is a MediaTek Helio P90 processor with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The thin carbon phone also has a dual camera with 16 megapixels on the back and a selfie camera with 20 megapixels.

Firas Khalifeh, CEO of Carbon Mobile said, “It has been an immense effort by a small but dedicated team to come together to challenge an industry that is stagnating in terms of material innovation.” The last twelve months have been a great challenge for the company, as the last test and production phases have been interrupted by the pandemic. “We used this time to perfect our HyRECM technology and to advance design decisions that were intended for the next device.”

This is behind the HyRECM technology

As HyRECM technology the company (abbreviation for Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Material) refers to the merging of carbon fibers with a complementary composite of signal processing characteristics entails. Because carbon alone would block radio signals. However, in four years of research, Carbon Mobile has developed a robust monocoque housing based on carbon fiber . Its advantages lie on and, above all, comfortably in the hand, because the exterior of the smartphone is particularly thin and light. In addition, less than five percent plastic is used, which is also good for the environment.

The Carbon 1 MK II is inspired by the design principles of Bauhaus design . The motto “form follows function” has made a significant contribution to the appearance of the smartphone, taking into account the material properties. In contrast to conventional plastics, carbon offers high strength and a particularly attractive look. In addition, the smartphone should be easy to repair. You can pre-order the Carbon 1 MK II on the company website for 799 euros. It will then also be available in selected stores and from retail partners from mid-March 2021 .
