Xiaomi introduces a smartphone with a screen that is rounded on all sides

Xiaomi presents a concept phone that is characterized by an innovative display: there are waterfall edges on all sides. The aim is to create an infinity effect that makes the smartphone appear even larger.

With the so-called “Quad-curved Waterfall Display” , Xiaomi clearly surpasses the curved screen technology already used in models such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra . The waterfall effect extends around the entire frame of the smartphone and the curve of the glass is much more prominent at an angle of 88 degrees.

There is little room left for connections and buttons. Xiaomi explains that the concept was aimed at a “connection-free unibody design”. On the other hand, there are small rounded cut-outs at the corners to create a flawless transition.

Xiaomi: will the concept phone be available soon?

However, it is questionable whether the smartphone with the display that is rounded on all sides will make it onto the market in the near future. Since it was only shown in pictures so far, industry experts doubt its feasibility. A spokesman for the company confirmed to “The Verge” that the smartphone actually exists and that it has already been tested. The display is the result of “countless innovations in the bending of glass and in lamination technology”. A total of 46 patents are said to have been necessary for the development .

However, Xiaomi has already presented smartphones in the past that were not available to buy anywhere in the world – such as the Mi Mix Alpha from 2019 with a display that covered almost the entire phone.ย

Xiaomi plans that for the future

Xiaomi is apparently relying on smartphones without ports for the future. In line with this, the Chinese company presented “Mi Air Charge”, a completely wireless charging system, on January 29, 2021 . This is a box that is supposed to send electrical energy to the smartphone via 14 integrated antennas – similar to a router that sends out a WLAN signal.
