Surviving and Thriving in the Worldโ€™s Toughest Industry: Ben Stranahan

Ben Stranahan
Ben Stranahan

โ€œI want to move to Hollywood and make it as a star.โ€

How many times do you imagine these words have been uttered by Hollywood hopefuls, knowing full well the odds of fulfilling their dreams are next to none?

Each year, hundreds of thousands of aspiring actors and entertainers try their luck at making it on to the silver screen.

Few ever do. Even fewer go on to become producers for actors such as Neve Campbell, Bill Paxton, Imogen Potts, Alex Wolff and many others.

Ben Stranahan is not only an exception to the odds; he has managed to carve out an incredible career as an actor, producer, musician, and much more, earning award after award, and all at a young age.

Ben boasts a multifaceted list of accomplishments in theater, film, and television, with lead roles in such films as Adam Levins Indie hit, Population Zero, and Andrew Chanโ€™s award winning anthology series, The Midnight Anthology, where he acted opposite Clancy brown.

Ben, an Aspen, Colorado native who was raised by inspiring and creative parents, found himself at a young age gripped by a lifelong pursuit and passion for the arts. Ben finds solace in something he once heard Richard Linklater say in an interview “People who ask me why I make films don’t understand that it’s not a choice. Painters paint, filmmakers make films.”ย

Ben considers the arts to be the most important thing he can engage in and explore – both for himself and his community.

From Benโ€™s website,ย

โ€œBen started his career early in Aspen, Colorado Colorado, doing theatre and playing music for his middle school โ€œAspen Community Schoolโ€ Having been fortunate to be a part of the performance arts at such an early age, he knew right away that this was something he wanted to do the rest of his life. He then continued to do theatre, short films, play drums and piano for his band until he graduated high school in 2004. It was right after high school that he knew what the next step would be: moving to Los Angeles to continue to follow his dreams of becoming an artist.ย

Ben then began his professional career in the arts as a graduate of both the Berklee College of Music Summer Programs in Boston, and then 3 years at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. He has since had success as an Actor, Producer and Musician.ย

Ben has produced many feature films including Mean Dreams starring Bill Paxton, Sophie Nรฉlisse, Josh Wiggins and Colm Feore, which premiered in 2016 in the Directors Fortnight at Cannes and as a Special Presentation at TIFF. Mean Dreams went on to be sold into over 50 countries and have theatrical releases in over 10 territories. He’s also produced the genre-bending psychological thriller Population Zero that’s been critically lauded around the world and produced the thriller Calibre, which was released on Netflix in 2018 and was nominated for 4 BAFTAโ€™s winning one for Best Actor – Jack Lowden.ย

His most recent production work was Castle in the Ground, starring Imogen Potts, Neve Campbell and Alex Wolff, Which premiered at TIFF and SXSW.

In the TV landscape, Ben has produced the smart anthology series The Midnight Anthology starring Clancy Brown. The pilot premiered at the New York Television Festival in 2015 and won both the Artistic Achievement and Best Director awards at the festival. Ben and the The Midnight Anthology team are in development on the remaining episodes of the series.

THE KGM BECOMES THE FIRST CARBON OFFSETTING POLITICAL ORGANIZATION IN THE BAHAMAS

0

Global warming is an accelerating problem that the world canโ€™t afford to neglect; itโ€™s not only real, it is also the most serious issue of this generation. The Bahama Islands are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to their geographical location.

For this reason, the KINGDOM GOVERNMENT MOVEMENT (KGM) has committed to eliminating carbon emissions. This commitment is part of the KGMโ€™s overall environmental strategy to decrease energy use as much as possible, switch to decarbonized and renewable energy, and offset their remaining CO2 emissions by investing in a CO2 offset program. The KGM has pledged toย  become a regular buyer of carbon offsets to negate its impact on the environment.ย

Dr. Sir Kevin Charles King, the leader of the KGM,ย  vows to reduce the islandโ€™s carbon footprint by 50% within the firstย  five years of a KGM-led government.

The Bahamas is a blessed country in terms of its location. The archipelago is a coral-shaped limestone mountain extending like a pearl in a shallow sea.

Many studies have shown that the ocean and its resources created the islandโ€™s minerals in a natural process that took millions of years. This shallow sea is a wealth of authentic minerals that are now widely used in consumer products almost too innumerable to mention. Glass, paint, ceramics, jewelry, and plastic are just a few of the products that come from the Bahamas Islandsโ€™ natural minerals.

Its main mineral is calcium carbonate, which is a biological and geological element that is a blessing for the Bahamas. For the first time in the BAHAMASโ€™ history, the KGM will use this resource for the benefit of its citizens.ย

The islandsโ€™ natural resources serve various purposes; they have industrial, agricultural, household, environmental, health, and dietary applications, to name a few. The KGM will lead the way forward by practicing carbon offsetting to conserve these wonderful natural resources. They are committed to reducing their carbon footprint by 50% in the first five years of their governance.

Quote from KGM

โ€œWe are the voice of change to a paradigm of progress on a path to a purity of purpose. Bahamas transform! The time is now,โ€ says Dr. King.ย

About the Kingdom Government Movement

Dr. Kevin C. King founded the Kingdom Government Movement (KGM) in 2018. The KGMโ€™s philosophy is to uphold the preamble of the Constitution of the Bahamas, which recognizes the Bahamas as a Christian nation under the supremacy of God.

Additional details about the KGM

The KGM seeks to be the first political organization to change the political system and culture in the Bahamas. They pledge to usher in true sovereign independence and financial equality to all citizens of the commonwealth of the Bahamas.

The KGM has a campaign slogan on its website. The name of the campaign is THE KGM SOLUTIONS CAMPAIGN.

Why you should Listen to Michelle Obamaโ€™s New Podcast

0

Michelle Obama is the person we all wish we could call our friend, and in a way, she is. She has been quite an inspiration to us all throughout her time in the White House, and even afterwards. She truly cares about people and it seems like her mission in life is to spread knowledge and work for the greater good of mankind. Her book became a massive success, which you know, thatโ€™s hardly a surprise considering she wrote it and sheโ€™s brilliant at everything she does. So when we heard that sheโ€™s doing a podcast we were super excited to listen to it and absorb every word she has to share. If you still need convincing as to why you should listen to Michelle Obamaโ€™s podcast here are just a few.

1. The Guest List Is Incredible

The podcast will feature the people Michelle is closest to including her relatives, friends, colleagues and people she finds interesting and inspirational. Itโ€™s not driven by wanting fame, sheโ€™s got more than enough of that during her time as the First Lady, this is more about going back to your roots and appreciating what made you who you are.

2. Barack Obama Is The First Guest

The first episode of the podcast is already available and her first guest is her husband, the former president of the United States, the one we all loved and who was our only hope for America. But in this podcast they donโ€™t discuss politics, they talk about their relationship, how it changed them, why they ended up together and what they appreciate most in each other. Itโ€™s long and thoughtful, with some of that banter weโ€™ve come to expect from the couple, and with lots of nuggets of wisdom, we should all really pay attention to.

3. You Will Find Out More About Michelleโ€™s Past

In the podcast Michelle is planning to dive into her past, what was her upbringing like, what kind of a person she was when she was younger and what shaped her into the glorious woman that she is now. Youโ€™ll learn more about her family, her home life and what she values most.

4. It Will Make You Think Of Your Community

One of the things Michelle mentioned in the very first episode is that she feels like these days people often think of themselves first. They focus on whatโ€™s good for them, which is fine, but they no longer care as much about those who surround them. Michelle says that itโ€™s our community that influences us the most and thatโ€™s something we should value a lot more than we do these days.

5. It Will Make You Realise Whatโ€™s Important

These days a lot of people are striving to have it all, we admire people who are rich, people that can afford all the โ€œthingsโ€. But the Obamas will teach you about whatโ€™s truly important and how things donโ€™t make you happy. How sharing with others is what really lifts people up and makes this world a better place.

6. It Will Give You Hope

This is definitely a very challenging year for all of us, everything feels uncertain and weโ€™re all struggling with daily tasks and often find ourselves overwhelmed with anxiety. Weโ€™re all in this together. But Michelle Obama truly believes that you have to hold out hope for a better future and do what you can. So if youโ€™re in need of hope โ€“ this podcast is definitely a good idea for you.

7. It Will Make You Think Of Your Values

Michelle makes a convincing point about how values arenโ€™t really just our own. Theyโ€™re often shaped by the people that surround us. They might evolve over time, but you always start with valuing your family, the people around you. And then you learned about their values and they slowly become your values too. Weโ€™re all products of the combination of people that surround you.

Africa has proven that democracy does not work without money

0
Soldier in helmet holding machine gun with national flag on background - South Africa

In Mali, the gold mine of Africa, a military coup took place, the country’s top leadership was arrested, and the president agreed to abdicate.ย This caused sharply negative comments from the Russian and French Foreign Ministries, and the next part of this story could be the French invasion.ย In general, the Malian crisis confirms what was known before: democracy does not work without money.

Colonialism is now blamed for all the troubles in black Africa.ย The list of troubles is well known – appalling poverty, extremely low quality of life, chronic wars and odious regimes replacing each other through coups d’etat.

Also Read: WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO MICHELLE OBAMAโ€™S NEW PODCAST

โ€œThe whites will still answer for this,โ€ the legendary President of Zimbabwe,ย Robert Mugabeย , who was sometimes called โ€œblack Hitlerโ€ by the media,ย used to sayย ย .

This is the rare case when the diagnosis is correct, but the history is worthless.

From the point of view of the “new ethics”, colonialism must be blamed for sucking resources out of African peoples, preventing them from developing – and here you are, a continent of a thousand troubles.

However, the real fault of the colonialists lies elsewhere.ย Thanks to them, the modern states of black Africa dripping with sweat, pus and blood did not arise in a natural (that is, national) way, as, for example, in Europe.ย Their borders are the borders of former colonies that did not take into account the ethnic picture on the ground.ย So, within the framework of one country, tribes and peoples were united, which often could not stand each other, spoke completely different languages โ€‹โ€‹and worshiped different gods.ย This extremely complicated the nation-building, preserved tribalism, gave rise to conflicts, an atmosphere of mutual distrust and ugly political systems created according to the principle of “the winner-tribe takes everything and oppresses everyone else.”

The Republic of Mali is almost like that – a multi-ethnic, though predominantly Muslim state (more than 80% of the population), but you also need to understand that other Malians adhere to traditional beliefs, that is, they are polytheists and are subject to destruction from the point of view of radical Islam.

Now another military coup has taken place there, which began with a mutiny of the armed forces under the command of General Sheik Fantamadi Dembele and two brothers-colonels Diau and Mama Seku Lelant.ย Less than a day after the storming of the military base in the city of Kati, which became the headquarters of the putschists, all the country’s top leadership – President Ibrahim Boubakar Keita, Prime Minister Bubu Sisse and Speaker of Parliament Moussa Timbine – were there.

Shortly thereafter, 75-year-old Keita, who took over the country in 2013, resigned.ย And the opposition “June 5 Movement” declared that it was not a military coup at all, but a natural result of the “people’s revolution”.

Indeed, in recent months, the republic has had its own version of “Belarus”: opposition rallies of many thousands demanded the president’s resignation, accusing him of conniving at corruption and falsifying the will of the people.ย Keita, through the Supreme Court, succeeded in overturning the results of parliamentary elections in several single-member constituencies, as a result of which his party won a majority.

It is highly likely that later all this will be declared not just a “victory of democracy”, but altogether – a “democratic process.”ย Even despite the fact that Paris – the main guardian of Mali – now pretends that everyone is out of anger and categorically condemns what is happening.

“Democracy”, if we are talking about Mali, is basically the key word.ย Until relatively recently, this country was considered an established, relatively developed and even advanced democracy by African standards.ย Moreover, this was the opinion of the same people who considered Russia to be among the states with a rigid form of authoritarianism.

This made Mali something almost unique in black Africa.ย The republic was set as an example.

The history of the Malian state is interesting and very long.ย Its lands were decisive for two empires, the first of which – Ghana – appeared in the 3rd century, and the second, which existed in the late Middle Ages, was also called Mali.ย Then the Songhai trade power arose, followed by several more, the period of the Moroccan conquest was followed by the period of the Bambara nation state (one of the largest ethnic groups in the country) and the Islamic empire of Vassulu.

For about a century, Mali and neighboring Senegal formed a single French colony, and from the end of World War II to the second half of the 1950s, they were overseas territories of France, that is, the Malians had full French citizenship.ย Having gained independence, they began to build socialism, preach the Marxist-Leninist doctrine and make friends with Moscow.ย This did not bring any particular benefit to anyone – neither the USSR nor Mali, and after the coup d’รฉtat of 1968, the pro-Western dictatorship of Moussa Traore came to replace the hungry Malian socialism, which lasted until 1991, that is, until the next putsch.

It was then that democracy is said to have flourished in Mali.ย The press in the country was recognized as free, elections – fair, politics – public.ย The courts seemed to be working, the opposition opposed the authorities, and the authorities did not touch the opposition.ย The French were sincerely proud that under their tutelage the former colony had become a part of the “free world”, because, it would seem, what a wilderness – and such customs.

The truth, however, is that compliance with high Western standards did not give Mali much more happiness than Marxism-Leninism.ย A well-known feature of its statehood was and remains the impenetrable poverty of the population.

Malians could look down on their neighbors when it came to all kinds of democracy indices, but otherwise everything was very, very bad, wherever you stick – life expectancy or infant mortality, per capita income or the availability of basic goods.

The most eloquent figure, perhaps, is this: among Malian men, only half are literate, among women – only one third.

An uneducated society is easy to manipulate, and this was the dark secret of Malian democracy, as well as democracy, for example, in India, where the ruling party won elections for decades, filling millions of votes with administrative measures from the very bottom of society.

India, however, has since gone far ahead, while Mali has stagnated.ย The population grew rapidly, but there was no more food, and in 2012 the vaunted democracy also fell apart.ย First, the separatist formation Azavad, created by the Tuaregs and Islamists, arose in the desert north.ย This was followed by a new military coup, and the Islamists went to war against the Tuaregs, dragging the country into the bloodbath of the “Arab Spring”.ย Since then, with French military assistance, it has been possible to pacify both those and these, but the past, 2019, year was marked by the ethnic cleansing of the Fulbe people, who were suspected of having links with Islamists.

Being under the obsessive military and political patronage of France, Mali did not degenerate into a typical dictatorship, and the cunning President Keita was always ready to cooperate with any human rights activists.ย But now everything seems to have come to a critical point.ย What is happening sharply does not suit Paris, which means that even a military intervention is possible (the French visit their former colonies crowded and armed much more often than anyone else), and chaos, and a lot of blood, and the collapse of the unfortunate country, the poverty of the population of which by the standards of the 21st century, it seems simply indecent.

With another coup, Mali once again confirms the long-known truth.ย Progressive institutions, carefully constructed in Western fashion, will still not work if almost the entire population is struggling to make ends meet.ย The country will endlessly be thrown into extremes – unrest, revolutions and coups – simply because people have nothing to eat.

In theory, such a life may correspond to very high political standards, but in practice we are talking about endless manipulation, exploitation and purely corrupt interactions between the elites and the people.

And the main smirk of history, perhaps, is that the lands of Mali are rich in gold (but they are not rich in anything else, apart from peanuts, cotton and unique monuments of imperial times).ย A beautiful, classical literary move would be to portray the Malian mines as the root of evil and the reason that the French are still patronizing the Malians.ย However, the heirs of Napoleon have let and continue to pour in these sands much more money than they could earn on Malian gold, even in theory.

It will only get worse in the future, since the population of the impoverished republic is growing rapidly, and the combination of youth and disorder is aย ย breeding ground for Islamism.ย As practice shows, in such cases, even Western curators forget about democracy and confidently rely on a tough police regime so that local terrorism does not reach the international level.

Sobchak’s annual income is known to public now

0

TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak earned 185.8 million rubles in 2019, follows from the income statement of her husband, artistic director of the Theater on Malaya Bronnaya Konstantin Bogomolov.

According toย ย Kommersantย , the income of Bogomolov himself amounted to 19 million rubles.

Sobchak owns three land plots (total area – 3.1 thousand square meters), a house (482 square meters), three apartments (74.4 and 353.7 square meters in Moscow and 1/3 apartments in 245.7 sq. m. in St. Petersburg).ย She also owns seven non-residential premises.ย In two of them – 1/3 of each.

Bentley Continental GT Speed โ€‹โ€‹is registered for the TV presenter.

The government allowed to register cars at the MFC

0
It will now be possible to register vehicles in the multifunctional centers of state and municipal services (MFC).ย The decree on this was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.ย The document wasย published on the website of the Cabinet.

The new service will become available thanks to the involvement of employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to work on the territory of the MFC.ย They will only inspect cars.ย Employees of public service centers are entrusted with accepting applications and issuing ready-made documents.

As follows from the text of the resolution, the service will not be available in all MFCs, but only where there is the necessary infrastructure for this.

The government believes that the new rules for registering cars will simplify the state registration procedure, save time for vehicle owners and expand the range of services provided at the MFC.

Know the secret: The Difference Between Publicity and Advertising

0

A recent conversation with a fellow business mum about recognising the difference between free publicity and paid advertising made me wonder how easy it really is to tell.

I have worked in writing, public relations and marketing for more than 10 years, so recognising material โ€“ particularly in print โ€“ which has been paid for has become second nature. However my friend said she found it difficult to spot the difference sometimes.

Here is a guide to media space and time that has been paid for, and that which is free and generated through public relations.

I think I can safely say it is easy to spot most advertising โ€“ it comes in breaks in your favourite TV programs, between music on the radio, down the side of a web page or sometimes pops up from the page, and surrounds articles in newspapers and magazines.

Where it becomes hazy is when the information is included in an article or advertorial (an advertisement made to look more legitimate as an editorial piece โ€“ these should carry the word โ€œadvertorialโ€ and โ€œadvertisementโ€ at the top), in a news or current affairs item or when the presenter speaks about a product as they would discuss the news, similar to John Lawsโ€™ Cash for Comment affair.

The job of a PR consultant is to generate publicity for their client. Their client isnโ€™t paying for the time or space and the information considered more credible by the public. Examples include an article, news broadcast or TV segment. This media coverage is achieved through many avenues such media liaison, media releases, article marketing, public speaking, case studies and blogging.

Many of the articles you read in the paper, magazines or online and items you heard on the news or radio today would have been generated through public relations. For example after the federal governmentโ€™s recent increase in the first home buyersโ€™ grant a host a organisations, from real estate agents to banks, sent out press releases commenting on the grant and what it meant for the economy. They were positioning themselves as experts, or contacts the media could use when covering the story.

Whether the information came to the journalist via a media release or they chased it up through contacts, it is still from PR. The biggest difference between getting something published once because the media outlet liked your story, and getting regular coverage, comes from maintaining a good relationship with journalists, producers and editors. Good PR, whether done by you or a consultant you hired, leads to you being the contact the media calls on when they want to know something about your topic.

Advertising is about guaranteeing your message gets out there when you want through payment. It is seen as less credible because the organisation has paid for the space or time. However public relations is about communicating your message to your public, usually via the media. A company or issue receiving media coverage is seen as more credible because the journalist or presenter has endorsed the message.

6 Free Mystery Movie You Must Watch On Amazon Prime

Finding a good movie to watch these days is such a hard task. Thereโ€™s just so much choice and so little time that actually committing to a couple of hours of watching a film seems almost impossible. So a large majority of us waste time watching pointless Youtube videos, scrolling Twitter and Instagram or just binging old TV shows weโ€™re already seen before. But what if we told you that there are quite a few good mystery movies that you can watch almost for free and theyโ€™ll be engaging enough that youโ€™ll feel furry immersed in a story and wonโ€™t even notice the time passing? Sounds too good to be true, doesnโ€™t it? But Amazon Prime actually does have a whole bunch of mystery movies that you can watch for free if you have the membership, and we recommend you start with these.

1. Blow the Man Down

This is a new movie that was released this spring straight to Amazon Prime and itโ€™s about two sisters who are attending a funeral of their mom in a sleepy boring town. Except after the funeral, one of them goes to get a drink to try and drown her sorrows and ends up in quite a pickle. She calls her sister to help her hide the evidence of her crime and in the process, the girls discover that their town isnโ€™t as boring as they thought and has quite a seedy and dangerous underbelly and lots of their neighbours have many skeletons in their closet.

2. A Simple Favor

Who knew mystery movies could also be funny? This gem with Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively is a definite must-watch for those of you who love a solid movie full of unexpected plot twists and really good mysteries that just suck you in, but also wouldnโ€™t mind a funny comedic moment once in a while to lighten the mood. Honestly, this idea of combining a comedy and a mystery in one movie is groundbreaking and we hope it becomes a genre of its own because we want more movies like this.

3. Blue Velvet

Itโ€™s a David Lynch movie and honestly, that should be enough to make you want to watch it. Itโ€™s absolutely insane, we wouldnโ€™t even know how to describe the plot without giving anything away. Letโ€™s just say that finding a human ear one day can lead to some pretty crazy discoveries, which in turn can really uproot your life in the most unexpected ways.

4. Annihilation

Annihilation is one of those movies that keeps you confused and guessing until the end, and if weโ€™re being honest, even after the movie is over. Itโ€™s just so mind-blowing and weird, yet undoubtedly amazing that we canโ€™t quite believe that itโ€™s available for free now. Natalie Portman plays an ex-soldier and a biologist whose husband went off on a mission and then one day just randomly showed up at home in critical condition, having absolutely no idea how he got there or any recollection of what happened. Except thatโ€™s not the weird part, the strange part is that no one has ever returned from a mission he was sent on, apart from him. Natalieโ€™s character then volunteers to go and investigate what happened in this strange place called The Shimmer, where the normal and alien blend together to create something out of this world.

5. The Lighthouse

Itโ€™s a 2019 movie that was shot using 1930โ€™s camera lenses in black and white. It stars William Defoe and Robert Pattionson and is shot in a really unusual ratio thatโ€™s almost square. The plot follows two lighthouse keepers who have a 4-week contract to tend to the lighthouse on an island. They are the only two people on the island, so itโ€™s quite a lonely job but it seems easy enough. Except they donโ€™t really get along and with every single day it seems like theyโ€™re starting to lose their mind and see some really weird inexplicable things. Robert Pattinson described this movie as highly intense and basically inventing a new genre of movies, which is just panic. He said that if you want to experience what an almost 2-hour long panic attack feels like โ€“ watch this movie.

6. The Handmaiden

This movie is about a rich Japanese mistress called and a Korean servant whoโ€™s got a secret. Sheโ€™s actually not as naive as she looks and is actually a skilled criminal whoโ€™s got a famous partner in crime who plans on marrying the rich mistress in order to steal her fortune. The servantโ€™s job is to find out as much as possible about the mistress, earn her trust and help her partner in crime complete his evil plant. But there are so many wild turns in this movie that we really donโ€™t want to tell you anything else. Letโ€™s just say things are way more interesting and complicated than they look.
